name stumble out of his own blistered mouth. ''Kristen!" It was both a question and a plea. He could feel the weight of her body pressing against his. He wanted to look at her, touch her, establish contact with her, but his movements were sluggish and phlegmatic.
There was a baleful moan, then a gurgling sound like a pathetic plea.
Her eyes were open, haunted things, bleached white and unseeing, darting nervously from hollowed, pointless sockets. They looked like orbs of white ivory, crazed and useless decorations in a surrealistic painting.
A scream welled up in his constricted throat.
Kristen's once symmetrical face was twisted into something unrecognizabledistorted, bloated, discolored. The flesh was gone.
Charlie recoiled and rolled over, his own body again slamming against the ornate steel bars of the railing. There was the unmistakable sound of screws ripping out of concrete, and suddenly he felt himself plunge into the terrible blackness and inevitable collision with the sandy earth.
His body made a slapping sound when it hit, and he felt enormous pain shudder through his body. Dazed and shattered, he slipped from one nightmare world into the folds of
